My fascination for doubling, the human being and his reflections is related
to its connection with photography. Subjective doubling could be seen as the
origin of all acts of knowledge and all artistic activity. Man has always tried
to double himself in the search for self-knowledge. Before photography only
water and mirrors allowed man to have a direct knowlegde of his image.
Mirrors and water are still basic elements of photography itself.
Even now in the era of digital images a mirror is inside the camera and though
the water has been replaced by a chip his relation is not yet gone.
Twins are similar and often have almost identical bodies. Stripping them of
their distinct personal characteristics and contemporaniety I create a situation
of ‘objective’ observation where subtle gestures gain sculptural importance.
Photographing them together mimicking each other then separately, I atempt to
take a close look into the ‘space’ of their self definition- in between the
‘I’ and ‘my reflection’. Identical twins are an identity puzzle. Their similarity or
affinity doesn’t reveal the same identity. When amplified through play and
photography, this existential doubt becomes tangible.
